Baby Bedding : What To Consider When Buying It

Written by Mark Walters
Summary:

Babies do not care about the color or design of their bedding, but they want it to be safe, clean and comfortable. Therefore, how cute items are should not be the factor that you base your buying decisions on. The good news is that the items that you see in reputable baby bedding stores should all have passed stringent tests, however, that does not mean that you do not need to assess and evaluate items yourself. When you look at something, ask yourself – is this 100% safe for my baby? If you are not totally convinced then do not buy it, even if it perfectly matches the decor in the baby’s room.

When deciding what kind of baby bedding to buy you need to make certain that your baby’s safety is your main consideration. Remember, babies do not care about color or design, but they do expect a safe environment to sleep in. Therefore, pay attention to the safety of baby bedding first and foremost, and keep factors such as how cute something is, or how well it co-ordinates with their night-clothing as secondary issues.

The first item of baby bedding that you need to buy is the crib itself. You need to make sure that is an appropriate size for your baby, that it does not have any sharp or rough edges, and that the bars on it are a sensible distance apart. It should also have a firm base and not be easy to rock, as once your baby grows a bit it will inevitably start bouncing around and pulling and pushing whatever it can get it’s hands on.

To prevent your baby banging themselves against the sides of the crib you will need some bumpers. Some people think that only one is needed for the end of the crib where the baby’s head is, but you really need four – one for each side. This is because your baby will wave their arms and legs about and may well turn themselves around whilst they are sleeping.

The blankets that you use should be appropriate your home’s temperature. If you buy polyester blankets you may find that they make your baby too warm. Likewise, you may find that acrylic cellular blankets are not a good choice. Cotton is the best choice of materials for baby blankets. As a general guide, a warm room (approximately 75 degrees) will require one sheet. Then, for every drop of 5 degrees, you should add another baby blanket.

You will need to buy a lot of baby bedding so that you do not have to wash it every other day. Getting three sets should be adequate, so that you only have to wash the items once or twice a week. On the point of washing, make sure that the baby bedding that you buy is machine washable. When washing, you should use a good quality washing powder (ideally one that is specifically meant for baby items) as some cheaper brands use chemicals which could irritate your baby’s skin.

You can use your imagination as far as colors and design are concerned. There is no need to worry about making any mistakes because your baby will have no understanding of what is cute and what is not. All they care about is having somewhere safe, clean and comfortable to sleep.
