Traveling while you are pregnant is almost inevitable, and for most women it occurs with frequency. If you are traveling internationally you will need to weigh the availablity and quaility of medical care provided in the country you are visiting.

The safest time to travel is during your second trimester. During the thrid trimester many health care provider suggest staying with 300 miles of home so that complication can be handled quickly and with minimal stress. As a general rule women as strongly discourage against air travel after 36 weeks. Always consult with your doctor when you are traveling great distances.

If you have any of this conditions listed below you should always consult with your health care provider before traveling:

history of miscarriage incompetent cervix history of ectopic pregnancy history of premature labor or premature rupture of membranes history of or present placental abnormalities threatened abortion or vaginal bleeding during present pregnancy multiple gestation (more than one fetus) in present pregnancy history of toxemia, hypertension, or diabetes with any pregnancy history of infertility or difficulty becoming pregnant pregnancy for the first time over the age of 35 years valvular heart disease or congestive heart failure history of thromboembolic disease severe anemia chronic organ system dysfunction requiring frequent medical interventions

Helpful tips for traveling while pregnant:

Be prepared with your insurance information

Research the medical facilities at your destination

Know your blood type, make sure all blood is screened for hepititis B and HIV

Make sure your food and water are clean and suitable for your consumption

Fasten your seatbelt around your hips

Try to walk every half an hour

Extend your ankles to prevent phlebitis

Rest as much as you can



Infants and air travel

Infants are susceptible to Discomfort and pain with Eustachian tube collapse during pressure changes on take-off and landing. Breastfeeding your baby Helps prevent this.
